Mapzen is looking for an intern this summer to join its Mobility team in San Francisco on the Transitland project. Transitland is an open-data platform that aggregates public transit stop locations, route lines, and schedules from transit providers around the world. Transitland enables querying, editing, and analysis through APIs and web-based applications.

We’re looking for an intern who is interested in helping improve Transitland’s support for complex train/subway stations (with entrances and multiple platforms) and complex bus routes (with multiple variants of a bus line). We’ll start the summer by analyzing patterns in existing stop or route data. By the end of the summer, we’ll turn the most interesting result of those investigations into a new feature that can be programmed into the Transitland platform.

Candidates are ideally in a graduate program or an upper-class undergrad program that is related to transportation, urban planning, geography, or computer science. Prior experience with quantitative data analysis and a scripting language is a must (Python, Ruby, or R are ideal.)

This is a paid internship. Hours will be full-time in Mapzen’s office in downtown San Francisco. Candidates must already hold authorization to take a paid internship in the United States.

    How to Apply

Please read more at https://transit.land and then write to us at jobs@mapzen.com with a subject line of “Transit data internship.” In your e-mail, please answer the following questions:

    • Why are you interested in this internship?
    • What type of grad/undergrad program are you in? At what stage are you at in your program?
    • Have you taken any courses or created any projects/papers/maps/analyses related to transportation?
    • What data analysis tools and scripting languages are you familiar with?
    • What ideas do you have for projects you’d like to create using public transit data?
    • What start and end dates for an internship would fit with your school’s schedule? (Minimum 8 weeks.)

Feel free to include attachments or links to any projects you’d like to share with us.

    Working at Mapzen

We are a team of passionate individuals who care deeply about technology and the power of Open. We come from many different fields and industries; each new team member adding to our company culture, rather than assimilating into it. Team members are given the flexibility to experiment and excel. We value things like work-life balance, respectful communication, and inclusiveness, and find ways to reflect these values in our work.
