    Job Title*: Natural Resource GIS Analyst
    Job Description: The Natural Resources GIS Analyst will provide technical and analytical support for National Forest plan revision. This project shall require GIS knowledge, geospatial analysis, cartographic design and map production. Work will be performed on-site at the Eldorado National Forest office in Placerville, CA. The Natural Resources GIS Analyst will perform the following tasks:

    GIS Project Support

    o Requires the use of USFS corporate and other agency Geographic Information System data to perform GIS analysis and produce maps for USFS projects.
    o Data capture, map attributing, editing, plotting and reporting as required
    o Completes and updates metadata records for GIS projects.
    o Collects geospatial and resource data using manual and technology-assisted methods including GPS and mobile computing technology.
    o Incorporates field collected and remote sensing data into corporate geospatial data sets using established procedures.
    o Updates geospatial data sets for multiple disciplines including recreation, silviculture, wildlife, hydrology, engineering, etc.

    Geospatial Analysis

    o Uses standard operations and scripted processes to manipulate and analyze geospatial data to support multi-resource analysis in support of planning,

    Cartographic and Map Design/Production

    o Uses GIS software and cartographic tools to create simple thematic and reference maps, following appropriate standards.
    o Reads and understands metadata to determine appropriate use.
    o Uses and understands project map templates

    Training and Support

    o Conducts informal training and provides technical assistance to GIS software users in the development, storage, retrieval, and analysis of data.

    About You

    In order to excel at the Natural Resources GIS Analyst position, you should possess the following skills, experience, and background:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Soils, Geology, Hydrology, Geography or Earth Science. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in GIS is highly desired.
    • Work-related experience pertaining to natural resource management
    • Expertise using ESRI's ArcGIS
    • Knowledge and ability to work within the ArcGIS online environment
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Experience writing technical reports
    • Expertise using Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat a plus.

    As a data pipeline engineer, you will join Mapzen’s mobility team to work on the Open Traffic project. Open Traffic is an open-source project working to create world-wide traffic data for planning and routing applications. Open Traffic provides the platform and tools to share traffic statistics from connected vehicles and mobile services. Mapzen’s role in this project is to scale the service to support multiple traffic data providers with the goal of providing worldwide traffic information. Privacy and security of traffic provider’s data is paramount.

    This role can either be on a contract or full-time basis.

    Responsibilities

    You will work closely with software developers and architects to develop a robust and scalable data ingestion pipeline. You will also work with routing engineers to design and develop interfaces with Mapzen’s open-source routing solution (Valhalla) and with mapping and data engineers to develop methods to visualize traffic data.

    While this role will focus on Open Traffic, there may be opportunities in the future to also contribute to the Valhalla routing engine and to the Transitland open transit data platform.

    Requirements

    We are looking for a talented senior-level developer to work with a diverse team. Excellent communication skills are key to the success of our open-source project, so it’s critical that team members can express themselves in a way that is courteous, clear, and collaborative.

    Also necessary:

    • at least 5 years experience with software development or research
    • proficiency with Python and/or C++ 11
    • experience with distributed processing for both batch and real-time data-pipeline operations (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Storm, Flink, Kinesis, or bespoke approaches)
    • experience with distributed data-stores (e.g., RedShift, Hadoop formats, S3, Postgres, SQL, or alternatives)
    • experience running such services at scale using a collaborative “dev ops” approach (along with tooling such as containers, Chef, OpsWorks)

    As a Mapping Technician, you'll play an important role in bringing self driving cars to the world. Our specialized maps are required before we can put our self driving cars on the road. In this role you will help label our high definition maps and identify features (like lane locations and traffic control devices) so that our car understand how to interact in the world. The layers are added using a layers-based editing software QGIS (similar to Illustrator with the addition of spatial reference).

    You should have strong attention to detail, good knowledge of how to use a computer, and good understanding of driving laws and behavior. Professionalism and sound judgment are required at all times, as well as the ability to work in a team setting. You'll be expected to keep certain project details confidential.

    Relocation Assistance Not Available for this Role.

    This is a W-2 position through our third party staffing provider. You will be an employee of the staffing provider and have access to health benefits, 401k, and more. Pay starts at $20/hr and is for business hours Monday through Friday (40hrs per week). Mapping Technicians are not eligible for OPT STEM extensions.

    Responsibilities
    Must be able to work at our San Francisco office during business hours Monday through Friday.
    Must work well in teams. You'll be working with others, and helping each other complete your projects.
    Must be able to think through complex traffic control situations, such as right of ways and intersection navigation.

    The California Policy Lab (CPL) creates data-driven insights for the public good. Our mission is to partner with California’s state and local governments to generate scientific evidence that solves California’s most urgent problems, including homelessness, poverty, crime, and education inequality. We facilitate close working partnerships between policymakers and researchers at UC Berkeley and UCLA to help evaluate and improve public programs through rigorous empirical research and technical assistance.

    Responsibilities

    The Policy Analyst will join our growing team at a critical juncture in our development. CPL has several projects in flight, ranging on topics from criminal justice and homelessness to employment and the social safety net. For a portion of these projects, the Policy Analyst will be responsible for managing and executing all aspects of our engagement, including developing and managing relationships with government partners, negotiating terms of engagement and data-sharing agreements, coordinating with and overseeing research assistants, analyzing large administrative datasets, and providing policy-relevant analysis. The Policy Analyst will contribute to a growing practice of advanced analytical solutions to provide data-driven research and technical assistance to governmental partners. The Policy Analyst will report to the Executive Director and assist the Executive Director in planning, development, and administration of the Lab. The position will require occasional travel to Sacramento or elsewhere in California.

    The Policy Analyst will apply a variety of statistical modeling approaches to large datasets in real-world settings. From project inception to delivery, the Policy Analyst will contribute to all facets of data collection and cleaning, model development, implementation, and will run multiple research projects concurrently. The position works directly with leading social policy researchers at UC Berkeley and UCLA, state and local government agency staff, as well as the leadership team at CPL.

    CPL Berkeley is being incubated in the UC Berkeley’s Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE). The mission of the Institute is to promote policy-relevant research in the fields of labor and employment at Berkeley and throughout the University of California. IRLE is headed by a Faculty Director, who also serves as the Faculty Director of CPL Berkeley.

    • Researches and analyzes large administrative datasets for policy-relevant insights.

    • Manages relationships with government partners, including regular updates, preparing agendas, and developing research strategies.

    • Assists the Executive Director with planning, development, strategy, and administration of the Lab.

    • Works with CPL faculty affiliates to design and implement rigorous research designs for the evaluation of public programs, including randomized control trials (RCTs) and quasi-experiments.

    • Researches and summarizes best practices in field.

    • Researches and drafts complex proposals, reports, and briefings.

    • Establishes and maintains contacts internally and with external constituents for the collection and exchange of data.

    Required Qualifications

    • Demonstrated quantitative skills, advanced knowledge, and experience in data/statistical analysis, including analyzing large governmental data sets.

    • Demonstrated experience in managing client relationships, meeting project timelines, and communicating with internal and external stakeholders in a productive and timely manner.

    • Strong STATA programming skills or knowledge of another, similar language (e.g., SAS or R) with commitment to learning STATA.

    • Ability to take initiative and manage projects with minimal supervision, including strong time management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.

    • Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills, including strong writing skills.

    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
